The man and woman watched me as I continued my approach. Expressions of disappointment, embarrassment and humiliation were deeply etched on both their faces. Their heads tilted down as they broke eye contact with me. ‘Oh, jeeze,’ I thought to myself. I’m 5’11, and at that time, a little over 160. I wasn’t a big person, but I wasn’t skinny either. Definitely wider than the vacant space I was looking at between them. The reality of how truly large the couple were became obvious once I reached my row. The man was wearing a seat belt extender.
Thankfully, I thought to myself, it was a direct flight (Not a nonstop), from Reno Tahoe International to Baltimore Washington International. We were stopping for some passengers to deplane in Phoenix Sky Harbor. The flip side was we were also picking up some new passengers. But if I was lucky, more passengers would deplane than board, which would give me the option of changing seats. When we left Phoenix though, the plane was full again. After all was said and done, I ended up in the same seat.
